Founded in 2018, the Shanghai Academy of Global Governance & Area Studies (SAGGAS) is a leading research institute jointly supported by the Ministry of Education of China and the Shanghai Municipal Government, and hosted by Shanghai International Studies University (SISU). As one of China’s pioneering institutions in the interdisciplinary field of Country and Region Studies, SAGGAS promotes an innovative academic model that combines multilingual expertise with a multidisciplinary foundation in history, geography, and anthropology.
Our mission is to advance Country and Region Studies as a discipline, develop high-level think tank platforms, cultivate talent for global governance and enhance China’s international communication through data-driven research and global dialogue. We are committed to building an academic community that combines policy advise, scholarly consultation, public engagement, and talent development.
Over the past five years, in collaboration with other SISU research institutes, SAGGAS has pursued a “Global Europe” research agenda that brings together European Studies, Russian–Eurasian Studies, and Middle Eastern–Arab Studies, creating a research network that spans the Eurasian continent. Our work explores modernization pathways within Eurasian countries, their interactions during these processes, and comparative studies between Chinese modernization and Eurasian development trajectories.
Since its inception, SAGGAS has hosted 55 international experts for a total of 87 scholar-months, while our faculty have undertaken 104 academic visits abroad, amounting to 217.5 scholar-months. These exchanges have fostered a dynamic academic ecosystem that integrates disciplinary capacity-building, knowledge creation, talent development, and public-service-oriented research both in China and globally.
As we continue to strengthen international collaboration in research and education, we warmly invite scholars from around the world to apply for the 2026 International Visiting Scholars Program. Successful applicants will benefit from robust institutional support, including access to our research platforms, academic networks, and multilingual resources.
Join us in Shanghai—learn from the world, understand China, and help shape the future of global knowledge.
