​Kimitaka Matsuzato

Kimitaka Matsuzato, Japanese national, Distinguished Professor at the Shanghai Academy of Global Governance and Area Studies (SAGGAS), and Professor at the Faculty of Law, the University of Tokyo. An internationally renowned scholar in Slavic and area studies, he is widely recognized as the foremost Japanese scholar in Slavic studies.

Education

1979–1985: B.A. in Law, Faculty of Law, the University of Tokyo

1985–1987: M.A. in Law and Politics, Graduate School of Law and Politics, the University of Tokyo

1996: Ph.D. in Law, the University of Tokyo. Dissertation: Total War and Local Governance: Food Supply and Agricultural Administration in Russia during World War I

Professional Experience

1991–2000: Associate Professor, Slavic Research Center (now Slavic-Eurasian Research Center), Hokkaido University

2000–2014: Professor, Slavic-Eurasian Research Center, Hokkaido University

2014–2025: Professor, Graduate School of Law and Politics, the University of Tokyo

During this period, served as Director of the Slavic-Eurasian Research Center, Hokkaido University; currently First Vice President of the International Council for Central and East European Studies (ICCEES)

March 2025–present: Distinguished Professor, Shanghai Academy of Global Governance and Area Studies (SAGGAS)

Research Interests 

Russian history, Ukrainian history, area studies, comparative politics, and Slavic regional studies.
